PE Kit

Children should wear their PE kit to school on the days that they have PE. PE kits should be plain, dark colours.
PE will take place outside whenever possible. Please see Class Dojo for your child’s
PE days for this half term.

Reading Books

It is really important that children re-read books to help build on fluency, expression and comprehension. Your child will bring home two reading books each week (A decodable  book matched to your child's current phonic ability and a shared book of their choice.) Both books will be changed either on a Thursday or a Friday. Please still bring your reading book and reading record into school every day as this will help us when we are reading with your child in school.

To help improve your child’s reading, it is encouraged to practise reading at least 5 times a week at home, this includes you reading a story to them. We ask that you record this in their reading records. Reading certificates are awarded to children who consistently read each week.

Knowledge Organisers

Knowledge organisers are a tool which summarise key facts and essential knowledge that we teach in school, linked to the National Curriculum. Every time your child starts a new a new unit of work they will be given a knowledge organiser. This is essentially a “fact sheet” for the topic. Increasing memory also helps students to think more creatively, critically and analytically. You can support your child by discussing the information on the knowledge organisers with your son or daughter and quizzing them on what they know.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

At the beginning of June, children in Year 1 will complete a Phonics Screening Check. The Phonics Screening Check is a quick check of your child’s decoding skills. Your child will be asked to read 40 words – 20 are real words, 20 are known as ‘alien words’ (made-up words).

How does the check work? Your child will be asked to read 40 words independently. The check has been designed to not put your child under stress. It will be carried out by a member of staff who knows your child well. It should only take a few minutes to complete, but there is no time limit Children who do not pass their phonic screening check in Year 1 will need to re-take it again when they are in Year 2.
