Careers Week
Last week, students at Herne View Church of England Primary School in Ilminster had the unique opportunity to engage with professionals from various fields as part of National Careers Week. The event featured an impressive lineup of guest speakers who shared their expertise and experiences, inspiring the next generation to explore diverse career paths.
Among the distinguished guests were two Navy engineers: one specializing in aircraft maintenance and operation, and the other focusing on submarine technology. Their presentations provided fascinating insights into the world of naval engineering. A fitness trainer also joined the event, discussing the importance of health and fitness, while a graphic designer collaborated with the children to design chocolate bar packaging, showcasing their creativity and design skills.
To conclude the week, a street artist captivated everyone with live demonstrations of their work, highlighting the vibrant and expressive nature of street art. Additionally, a solicitor provided an engaging talk about the legal profession, sparking interest in law among the students.
The feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive, with each year group taking away something unique from the talks:
Hermione – I enjoyed learning about different careers this week. I found Simon and James' talk about creativity inspiring because I am a creative person.
Penny – I discovered new jobs and look forward to exploring them when I'm older.
Sholto – The graphic designer's computer skills were amazing.
Maya – The wide range of careers helped me think about my future options.
Ted – I enjoyed the Navy talk the most because it related to engineering.
Overall, National Careers Week at Herne View was an inspiring event that broadened students' horizons and sparked their interest in various career paths. The diverse range of professions showcased not only provided valuable insights but also ignited a sense of curiosity and ambition among the children. They were encouraged to dream big and consider the multitude of possibilities available to them in the future. The interactive sessions and personal stories shared by the professionals left a lasting impression, motivating the students to explore their interests and pursue their passions with enthusiasm. Thanks go to the schools’ career co-ordinators Miss Hussey, Miss Holloway and Miss Pablo for organising this week for the children.
