Welcome to our Lower Key Stage 2 area for the year 2023-24!
We hope that you will find this area of the website useful as we build in documents and photos that will help you understand our curriculum and also see what the children have been up to. Please also check out the youtube links to some of the times table videos we learn in class.
In Year 4, Mr Lewis (Gatcombe) and Miss Swinson (Coopers) are the class teachers. In Year 3, Miss Roy (Ashton) and Miss Taylor (Morgan) are the class teachers. To support us all in class are Jean, Sam (maternity leave), Jo, Hannah (Thurs & Fri only) and Julie. Mr Ashdown works on occasions in both Gatcombe and Morgan classes whilst Miss Holloway and Miss Hussey are on their teaching studies in Gatcombe class for different parts of the year.
Year 4 Ukulele Performance March 2024
In the final week of the Spring Term 2024, Year 4 performed two songs per class to the rest of KS2 in the school hall. Over the previous ten weeks, Mr Male has taught each class for 45 minutes each. They learnt about four different chords and learnt a number of current pop songs and also enjoyed playing ‘Tab challenge’ against each other in order to be awarded dojo points. Many thanks to Mr Male and all the Year 4s look forward to seeing him next Summer for their guitar sessions! Fingers crossed, videos will open via the link and you can also see some photos!

This term our topic is the Ancient Egyptians. All classes have been creating Tutankhamun masks in their art lessons over the week. We hope to share some pictures of them soon, you will also get the opportunity to see some of them at the Art Exhibition in late February! It started with a plastic mask which had a template taped to it. Children are then using paper mache to solidify the unit. Finally, the children painted their masks in traditional colours. In Science, we have been looking at electricity, making and testing circuits and understanding that it is a type of energy. We have been naming vegetables in French and used the programme ‘Scratch’ in Computing.
Our PE lessons have consisted of learning a floor routine (which will be judged after half term) and some relaxing Yoga sessions with our teacher Paula. In RE we have looked at how Jesus inspires Christians, within this we spoken to Rev Jo about her week and what it entails. We have then written this up. We found she is a very busy lady! Our English focus across the phase has been on a story called ‘Varjak Paw’ who is a Mesopatamium Blue (ask your child!) and leaves for the town for the first time in search of a dog to save his family. We will also be looking at persuasive arguments and debates so apologies in advance for any expert arguing in the household!
October 2023 – Paignton Zoo
In October, the whole of Year 3 and 4 were able to visit Paignton Zoo for the day. After an hour on the coach, we were met by the Education Team and given an introductory talk about the zoo and its centenary before we all split into smaller groups to tour the zoo. We had a talk from staff, outside the giraffe house, about Habitats, giraffes, ostrich eggs and snake skin and saw so many animals in every corner. This included rhino, orangutan, gorillas, cheetahs, lions, tigers, red pandas, all sorts of monkeys, the brand new sloth, small insects and amphibians, lemurs and so many more! We all had a fantastic time though were extremely tired by the end!
