Key Stage 1

Golden, Puffin, Camelot, Hook and Dunkerton Class News

You will find our updates for families on Class Dojo. Termly newsletters and knowledge organisers can be found at the bottom of this page and we hope that you find them useful in supporting your child’s learning at home or to give you an understanding of what our children are learning during their time in Key Stage One.

Autumn Term 2023

The children have all settled into their new classes really well. As well as learning lots in their lessons, they have been busy preparing a service for Harvest and each class performed brilliantly in their nativities and carol concerts.

All children have two reading books to read at home – one is a decodable book that they read to an adult and one is a sharing book that the adult reads to them. Both count as a read and should be recorded in their reading records.

Spring Term 2024

We started this term with a visit from the Life Education Team including the much loved Harold the Giraffe. We have loved our new book that we have been reading in our English lessons, ‘Jeremy worried about the wind’. We particularly enjoyed the pages with no writing and used this as an opportunity to do some writing of our own. We are looking forward to using more high quality texts in our lessons over the rest of the year.

At the start of March, we celebrated World Book Day as a school. Many pupils took part in a paper plate competition, transforming the plates into a character or scene from a favourite book. We have used them to create some lovely displays which are pictured below.

At the end of term, we went to the Minster for our Easter service. We had a fantastic turnout from our families and we particularly enjoyed singing – especially Spring Chicken!

Reading cafe
We are inviting you to come into your child’s class to share a book with them at the beginning of the day after half term. The day of the week will change each week to enable as many of you as possible to come along. We will provide the books or you can choose from our book corners. The aim is to enjoy stories, poems, and nonfiction books together. Your child can read with you or listen to you reading aloud to them.

We are trialling the café in KS1 next half term (Spring 2). If this proves successful, we then hope to roll it out to the rest of the school in the Summer terms.

PE kit

Children should wear their PE kit to school on the days that they have PE. PE kits should be plain, dark colours.
PE will take place outside whenever possible. Please see Class Dojo for your child’s swimming day and PE days for this half term.

Reading Books:

It is really important that children re-read books. When they first read a book, they will be focusing on working out what each word says. When they re-read books, they develop confidence, fluency, expression and understanding which are all key skills in reading. For this reason, reading books will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays. Please still bring your reading book and reading record into school every day as this will help us when we are reading with your child in school.

Knowledge Organisers

Knowledge organisers are a tool which summarise key facts and essential knowledge that we teach in school, linked to the National Curriculum. Every time your child starts a new a new unit of work they will be given a knowledge organiser. This is essentially a “fact sheet” for the topic. Knowledge organisers will also be available online via Google Classroom. We will start “low-stakes quizzing;” to review and retrieve knowledge. We do these quizzes as it strengthens children’s memory and enables them to access more complex tasks. Increasing memory also helps students to think more creatively, critically and analytically. You can support your child by discussing the information on the knowledge organisers with your son or daughter and quizzing them on what they know. If you require a paper copy, please message your child’s class teacher on Class Dojo to arrange this.
