A very warm welcome toHerne View Church of England Primary School

Herne View Church of England Primary School Homepage

Herne View Church of England Primary School is set in the heart of the town of Ilminster. The children almost all come from the town, but a few join us from outlying villages. The school is very proud to be community based, working with local organisations for the benefit of the pupils and the local community.

It is our role to serve the families and children within the local community. This is regardless of gender, disability, special educational need, ethnic or social background or whether the family is of any particular faith or none. Our aim is to be as inclusive as possible.

STEM workshop with Wessex Water

Children in years 3 - 5 recently enjoyed a variety of exciting STEM workshops presented by Sam Russon, education adviser at Wessex Water. These interactive and hands-on sessions were designed to match the curriculum and reinforce the children's learning in school. Topics covered included rivers and the water cycle, treating water and the problem of climate change. In particular, the children explored the importance of water and learned various ways to conserve it. The workshops aimed to teach children how precious water is, highlighting its vital role in our daily lives and the environment. Participants were taught practical methods to save water with the hope that the children could apply this in their daily lives. They also learned about the processes involved locally in cleaning and treating water before it arrives in our homes. Additionally, the workshops provided insights into the average water usage per person each day. Matilda (Year 5) said, "I enjoyed being able to watch different experiments and have ago at cleaning the water." Milo (Year 5) said, "I liked learning how much water we use." Sholto (Year 5) said, "I liked thinking about the chemical name for water (h2O) and how we clean water." Herne View are looking forward to welcoming Sam back later this summer to carry out workshops for Year 6. Thanks go to Wessex Water and to Miss Elliott, the school's STEM lead for organising the visit.

Comic Relief 2025

Comic Relief saw pupils and staff at Herne View Church of England Primary School and Apple Orchard Pre-School in Ilminster joining in a non-uniform day to raise funds for this worthy cause. The children also took part in a competition to design their very own red nose which saw lots of creative and very humorous ideas shared and a winner from each class was announced in assembly. On a more serious side the day helped the children understand the aims of Comic Relief with classes watching and discussing the official Comic Relief film to understand why their voices mattered to support the courageous advocacy of all involved. However, it certainly wasn’t all serious and classes found lots of fun ways to enjoy the day even doing some Red Nose Day cookies in one Year 1 class. Altogether the school raised £245.Children’s thoughts from the day included: Arthur Y1- it means to be like a superhero! Ernie Y3 - I feel happy as we are donating money to the charity to help others go to school and have shelter like me. Kiki Y6- I think Red Nose Day should be more often because we can raise more money for people who are less fortunate than ourselves. Logan Y4 - I like Red Nose Day because the charities give money to people who need it. Giving them money makes me feel happy because I'm giving something to other people. Freddie Y1 - It is important to look after people who need help. Alice Y5 - a small amount can go a long way to helping lots of people. Elliott Y5 - We can raise money and have lots of fun at the same time.
